South Wales housing association appoints in-house solicitor in a first for Wales
Coastal Housing Group has appointed experienced Welsh lawyer Jamie Saunders as its housing management solicitor ahead of expected changes to social housing law coming into force next year.
The social housing specialist, who has been featured in both Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners’ respective guides to the best lawyers from across the country, will take on the new in-house solicitor role, reflecting Coastal’s commitment to maintaining its position as leaders in the Welsh social housing arena.
In his new role, Saunders will advise the organisation on all aspects of housing law, policy and best practise, and will be responsible for ensuring that Coastal Housing Group remains fully compliant and up to date with all laws and regulations.
Having spent more than a decade at Hugh James Solicitors as a Senior Associate specialising in property dispute resolution, Saunders has recently been asked to join the renowned Law Society Housing Law Committee where he will represent law practitioners from across the country.
The former Director of Housing at Cymdeithas Tai Cantref is now looking forward to using his expertise in his new role to ensure that the wider team at Coastal is empowered to serve its tenants and wider communities to the best of their abilities, maintaining its excellent level of tenant satisfaction.
Serena Jones, Director of Homes, Communities and Services at Coastal Housing said: “We are delighted to welcome Jamie to the team. With over 15 years’ experience and a proven track record working within the social housing field, Jamie has an excellent reputation in the industry and his appointment enables us to have a greater impact in the sector.”
“Having an in-house level of expertise will help us to ensure that both staff and tenants are fully informed of any potential changes to social housing laws so that any transitions are as seamless as possible.”
Speaking of his new role, Jamie said: “It’s really exciting to be one of the first housing management solicitor at a Welsh housing association, particularly at such an interesting time for the industry - with laws across the social housing landscape looking set to change within the next year, it’s important for companies in the sector to keep abreast with changes and be prepared.
“Coastal really does put its tenants at the forefront of everything it does which is very much in line with my values. Property litigation is an area of law that I am very passionate about as it really does make a difference to people’s lives, which I find very fulfilling. I’m looking forward to having a positive impact on the lives of tenants across the South Wales region”.
